Storing the amputated extremity in a refrigerator may not provide sufficient cooling required for preservation, as the temperature may not be low enough to effectively retard metabolic activity. Wrapping it in a towel and allowing it to sit at room temperature can lead to rapid degradation of the tissue, and if disposed of immediately, the possibility for reattachment is entirely forfeited.
